John Fredrick Vermillion, 99, of Independence, Kansas passed away at Medicalodges of Independence on Monday, September 20, 2021.

John was born on April 1, 1922, in Osawatomie, Kansas to John F. and Mabel E. (Roseberry) Vermillion. John along with his parents and 4 brothers moved to Independence in 1926. John then earned his associate degree and joined the United States Navy in 1942. After serving his country in World War II, John was honorably discharged in 1945. After returning home, he married Bonnie May Price on June 20, 1946, at the Methodist Church. John was the owner and publisher of the Independence Weekly News. John strayed from the path of newspaper publisher for a few years by going into politics. He served in the Kansas House from 1957 to 1960. He continued his political career as a Kansas Senator from 1969 to 1972 in District 10, and from 1973 to 1980 in District 15. Many will remember his slogan, “Thanks a million for voting for John Vermillion”. Once his political career ended, John continued his passion of serving the people by publishing his weekly newspaper. John delivered his newspapers to the local businesses in Independence until July of 2021, which was is final publication.

Through the years, John served as Trustee of Independence Community Jr. College, and commander of the Independence American Legion Post 139. He was also a member of the VFW, York Rite and Scottish Rite bodies of the Masonic Lodge, Eagles Lodge and Christian faith.

John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mabel Vermillion, wife, Bonnie, sons, John R., and Alan F. Vermillion, and brothers, George, Richard, William, and James Vermillion.

His memory will carry on with his two daughters, Penny Sullivan and Brooke Peltzer, ten grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made in John’s name to FORPAZ. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel and a Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Friday, April 1st, 2022 at 10:00 am at Potts Chapel to correspond with what would have been his 100th birthday.
