A local camper story from far away

COFFEYVILLE — Kristy Brown-Cardinal from Lander, Wyo., recently contacted The Coffeyville Journal with a unique story and piece of Coffeyville history. She said, “My friend was selling a vintage camper that needed a lot of work. They bought the camper north of Salt Lake City years before. They said it had one owner prior to them buying it. I tried to talk my husband into letting me buy it for years. He finally gave in and I went to look at it and then noticed the plaque on the outside of the camper. It said that it was a Comet and made in Coffeyville, Kansas. I knew then that I had to have it.

School board sets new date for IHS graduation ceremony

The USD 446 Board of Education met for a special meeting Monday at 7 a.m. to discuss options for the Independence High School graduation. It was determined that a final attempt would be made to provide the class of 2020 with a traditional graduation on Friday, July 10 at 8 p.m. at Shulthis Stadium, with a rain date of Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m.
Gov. Kelly announces masks must be worn statewide

TOPEKA – Gov. Laura Kelly announced Monday afternoon she will sign an Executive Order requiring that most Kansans in a public space must wear a mask, beginning 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 3.
County discusses SPARK funds disbursement

The regular Monday morning meeting of the Montgomery County Commission got underway as the Rev. Francis Aeschliman, of the Wesleyan Church in Coffeyville, gave the invocation before the agenda, meeting minutes and invoices were approved.
County commission hears COVID update

During the Montgomery County Commission meeting, commissioners asked Rick Whitson, county emergency management director, to offer updates on the COVID-19 pandemic numbers. Commissioners also heard from Brian Lawrence, CEO of Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, in regard to the health care situation for the county.
PARTIAL COLLAPSE

Safety and Code Enforcement Director David Cowan said crews from the City of Independence discovered a portion of the roof at 201 E. Main St. had collapsed. Cowan said after a review of the structure and consultation with professionals, a decision was made to barricade off the parking and sidewalks along the north and west side of 201 E. Main St. The building department is working to make contact with the owner and will present this situation to the City Commission June 30. Courtesy Photo
