Family Interests Do Not Belong in Public Affairs

Powerful politicians have this bad habit of elevating members of their family -- or the family of friends -- to high office. Sometimes the chosen kin or friend’s kin has fine qualifications. But the sense that their inside track gives them advantages over others with equally fine qualifications leaves a bad taste. It’s also un-American.

Kansas Senate quickly endorses legislation banning ‘sanctuary cities’

Kansas senators Wednesday backed a measure prohibiting municipal governments from creating “sanctuary cities,” rejecting concerns about the speed the measure was moving through the Legislature. House Bill 2717 is a response to action taken by the Unified Government of Kansas City/Wyandotte County to authorize municipal identification cards for undocumented people.

Sheriff’s Office arrests Cherryvale motorcyclist on multiple charges

On March 28th at approximately 5:11 p.m, a Patrol Sergeant with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was traveling west on US 160 highway east of Independence. The Sergeant had received a phone call advising them of a green in color motorcycle that was passing vehicles in a no passing zone, traveling east on US 160 Highway.

Wayne E. Keplinger, age 63, of Cherryvale, Kansas passed away on March 28, 2022 at the Labette County Medical Center, in Parsons, KS. He was born in Iola, KS on November 22, 1958 to Roy and Kathleen Keplinger. Wayne grew up in Cherryvale where he attended Cherryvale High School and graduated in 1976. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Pittsburg State University.

Tina Hannah recognized as USD 446 Quality Teacher of the Month

Mrs. Hannah is the Title Reading Teacher at Independence Middle School. This is Tina’s 28th year teaching at USD 446. This is her second year at Independence Middle School. Mrs. Hannah was a student teacher and substitute teacher with the district for several years before accepting a job within the Independence School District. Her nomination states: “Tina has done a great job jumping into the Title Reading position. Students enjoy coming to see her. They state that she is always nice to all students.”

Independence man arrested in Caney

On March 27, the Caney Police Department received a call from Spears Manufacturing, located in Caney, regarding a female employee being battered by a co-worker. A Caney Police Officer arrived on scene and was advised the suspect had left the premises. The Officer investigated, which included speaking with the victim and accessing and processing any injuries.
