Biden asks Congress for $33 billion in new Ukraine aid, power to seize Russian oligarchs’ assets

Body
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden asked Congress on Thursday for another $33 billion to support Ukraine in its defense from Russia’s invasion and for the authority to make it easier to seize and sell the assets of Russian oligarchs, vowing anew that the U.S. was committed to ensuring Ukraine’s victory in a war likely to drag on for months.

Rampaging Waters: Floods of Old Independence

Body
The year 1881 ended with conditions calming enough to allow the local German Baptist Brethren to conduct a public river baptism, which drew “a large audience of our best citizens.” While many curious attendees found the plain Quaker-like dress, old-fashioned colonial-era liturgy, solemn triple-immersion, and general “marked peculiarity” of the Anabaptist “Dunkers” a bit strange, the natural setting seemed appropriately sacred. The “rocky and picturesque banks of the Verdigris” on a “beautiful late November day” created a natural cathedral where “the choir woke the echoes of the woodland with their songs of praise.” The Osage might well have approved, recalling their own hallowed “Songs of the Waters.” Observers congratulated the young woman who had braved the icy river to join the family of God, but the more secular-minded among them recoiled at the notion of abstention from “all worldly amusements” including “Fourth-of-Julys, shows and circuses.” Independence folk have always loved their over-the-top fireworks, enough to inspire sensitive neighbors less enamored with deafening explosions to forsake the city on every smoky and sulfurous Fourth. For the devout Brethren gathered by the river all that reeking sulfur, the sparks, smoke, flames, shot-gun blasts, immoderate shouts, and excited squeals probably represented a foretaste of Hades. It also involved a significant waste of money, a transgression that few people of thrifty Pennsylvania German stock could easily stomach.

Safety upgrades for seniors’ homes

Body
Many seniors want to spend as long as possible residing in the comforts of their own homes. According to AARP’s 2021 “Home and Community Preferences Survey,” more than threequarters of U.S. adults age 50 and older prefer living at home. But getting older often comes with certain deficits that may not make current living situations the safest for seniors.

Moore or Less

Body
The appearance of a sunny corner bedroom of my 12-room Victorian house started out orderly enough in 2007. At that time, it was my “Camp-Out Room,” the only furnished space on two floors, where I slept on a twin bed during visits to Independence while I still lived in Virginia.
