Local farmers market helps young man raise funds for Lexi’s LAMB

Using his culinary talents to help others, Xavier Wood, age 11, of Wichita, sells his variety of home baked brownies and breads and snack mixes at area farmers markets to contribute to multiple nonprofit organizations. Xavier has been doing this for several years and during the month of June, he worked with Lexi’s LAMB Foundation, out of Wichita.

Wilson County Fair to feature rodeo

FREDONIA — The 2020 Wilson County Fair will be an exciting one this year, said Cheri Nelson — 4-H Youth Development agent with the Wildcat Extension District — as the ACRA/IPRA Rodeo will be in Fredonia as in past years. "At this point in time, in Wilson County, we are kind of in a unique position because we have only had one confirmed case of COVID-19 and that was clear back at the first of April so at this point, after visiting with out health department, we are going to try to do things as normal as possible," Nelson said.

IPD warns community of impersonation of Officer

The Independence Police Department received information that someone operating a black Dodge Charger with tinted windows and a light-bar on top is attempting to pull cars over in the Independence Area. The incident occurred over the holiday weekend south of Independence on US 75 according to information from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The suspect is believed to be a male. IPD has shared the information with area law enforcement.

150 Independence 1870 - 2020

On June 25, the Independence City Commission proclaimed July 25, 2020 as Independence Sesquicentennial Day and July 4, 2020, through July 4, 2021 as the Year of the Independence Sesquicentennial. The Independence Sesquicentennial celebration will kick-off Saturday, July 4 at the Hille Band Shell in Riverside Park with a reading and presentation of the proclamation prior to the Mid-Continent Band concert. The concert will feature the premiere of a commissioned band number inspired by historical buildings of Independence. A year of celebration will follow. Celebrants are encouraged to use the hashtag, #indy150 with selfies, snap shots and historic photographs. These will be used to document the Year of the Independence Sesquicentennial and to collect images for a visual history of the city.

Community National Bank and Trust Tennis Classic Team Challenge set

The 46th Annual Community National Bank and Trust Tennis Classic will go on as scheduled next weekend. High School kids and adults will play Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. A team consists of five players and must include at least one male and one female. Each team will play three matches against another team: singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
