Getting Behind the Wheel with Confidence

Body
Dear Annie: Your column is part of my morning ritual. I have three grandchildren, and they’re all approaching the age where they’ll be learning how to drive. Our adult children are now 48, 44 and 41. Some years ago, when they were learning how to drive, I came across John Violette’s “Contract for Drivers,” clipped it, and stowed it away. Unfortunately, it’s very yellowed and illegible now. Would you be able to print it? -- Tutu from Hawaii

REDUCING SPAM MAIL

Body
Dear Annie: With this pandemic and people out of work, this might be a good way to get a few people back to work AND to save a ton of money. Both small and large businesses need to purge their mailing lists. I get mail from places I may have sent for a catalog years ago but haven't done business with them for many years. I have even cut off mailing labels and returned them at my expense to companies asking to be removed from their mailing list, but I continue to receive their mailings. And yes, I am registered with www.catalogchoice.org and https://www.dmachoice.org.

The Problem of 'Anti-Racism'

Body
Today, the nostrum goes, it is not enough for Americans to be not racist. They must be "anti-racist." This woke terminology has infused our lexicon. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., recently declared from the well of the Senate: "Being race-conscious is not enough. It never was. We must be anti-racists." What, pray tell, is the difference between being against racism and being anti-racist? Ibram X. Kendi, author of "How to Be An Antiracist," provides an answer: Racism is no longer to be defined as the belief that someone is inferior based on race. Instead, racism is to be defined as the belief that any group differences can be attributed to anything other than racism. Thus, any system that ends with different outcomes must be racist. Indeed, Kendi contends, "Racism itself is institutional, structural, and systemic."

Anxiety in Children

Body
A recent article in the American Psychological Association’s Monitor on Psychology discussed the alarming presence of anxiety in children and adolescents. According to survey data collected by the National Institute on Mental Health, approximately thirty two percent of United States adolescents have an anxiety disorder. Other large surveys have found the prevalence of anxiety in children to be between 12 and 20 percent. Most children with anxiety do not receive treatment. Some parents, teacher, and health care providers do not recognize the severity of anxiety in children. There is often the thought that the child will outgrow their problems and while this is often the case, in some children, anxiety will persist to the point that it negatively affects their lives. There are several different types of anxiety.
