Managing Aquatic Plants

As the weather starts to warm up, algae and other aquatic plants will become more prevalent in ponds. Aquatic plants are a natural part of the pond ecosystem and vegetation in and around ponds proving valuable for fish and wildlife habitat. They can also help reduce stream bank erosion. However, when aquatic plants become too prevalent and start to overtake a pond, they become a problem and are referred to as aquatic weeds. When considering aquatic weed control, remember these two points; prevention is always better than treatment and weeds need to be identified to determine the best option for control.

Wilson County Commission declares local disaster emergency

The Wilson County Board of County Commissioners met for their regular session Wednesday, May 1. Commissioner Casey Lair called the meeting to order, after which Commissioner Andrew Miller gave the invocation and Commissioner Jerry Scott led the flag salute. A motion was made by Commissioner Scott to approve the agenda and minutes of the April 24 meeting as presented. Commissioner Miller seconded the motion and it carried, beginning the meeting.

SEK Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosts banquet in Independence

Members and guests were treated to a catered meal from Little Bear Convenience Store in Neodesha, followed by some special recognitions, a presentation and closing thoughts led by Southeast Kansas Area Director Gary Larson and his wife and Administrative Assistant, Melissa Larson.

Sheriff's Office arrests two in ongoing narcotics investigation

On May 2, Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrested two individuals in connection with an ongoing narcotics investigation. The arrests occurred after deputies on patrol in Independence spotted a black Jeep suspiciously parked near the Main Street overpass, close to the railroad tracks.

(TNS) The Palestinian militant group Hamas said it had agreed to a cease-fire proposal for the Gaza Strip, but Israel’s war cabinet unanimously rejected it as “far from Israel’s necessary demands,” dashing hopes for an immediate pause in the fighting. Israel vowed to continue “its operation in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas” but also said it will send a delegation to meet with mediators “to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement.” In a statement later Monday, the Israel Defense Forces announced fresh airstrikes against Hamas targets in the Rafah area.
