CHRISTMAS IN JULY — The Mid-Continent Community Band performed holiday songs in their Tuesday evening concert, 'Christmas in July,' at the Hille Band Shell in Riverside Park, Independence. The concert even featured a special appearance by Santa Claus himself, much to the children's delight. The band performs every Tuesday evening through the warm months. Taina Copeland

Leadership Independence class has its day, finally

The Leadership Independence (LI) class of 2019-2020 was finally able to celebrate their graduation, as well as present their class project Thursday evening in downtown Independence. A brief opening statement was made by Cody Dixon and Lori Kelley, LI board of directors co-chairs for the class of 2019-2020, followed by a few words of appreciation to the class from Dean Hayse, Independence city commissioner, who said, "It's a heartfelt thank you from the city and the city commission on behalf of the citizens for your hard work, for your continued commitment and effort to bring this project to a close. I know you have been challenged by COVID-19 as many of us have. These signs for these parking spots have been part of our strategy to keep our downtown active and reminding to shop local."

KDHE amends travel quarantine list

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has amended its travel quarantine list. Florida as well as those countries with a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice with restrictions remain, but Arizona, Bahrain and French Guiana are removed effective today. Those traveling internationally are subject to CDC re-entry guidance and protocols.

Beatles vs. Stones tribute show returns to Parsons Municipal Auditorium

PARSONS — The debate between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones has been going on ever since they first crossed paths on the charts 55 years ago. The argument at the time, and one that still persists, was that the Beatles were a pop group and the Stones were a rock band: the boys next door vs. the bad boys of rock. So who’s better? These two legendary bands will engage in an on-stage, throw down - a musical "showdown" if you will - Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parsons Municipal Auditorium courtesy of tribute bands Abbey Road and Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Show.

KDHE receives grant for suicide care

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has been awarded a grant to support safer suicide care in behavioral health and healthcare systems in Kansas. The grant, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is for implementation of Zero Suicide in Health Systems.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture is excited to announce they are now accepting nominations for the first ever Kansas Agriculture Heroes Program. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses have performed essential functions to keep food on the tables of people worldwide. KDA established this program as a way to recognize those in the agriculture industry who went above and beyond to serve others and better their community when it was needed most.
