Bulldogs baseball falters late, falls to Ottawa in Regionals at Rock Creek

Coming off a tough loss at Parsons to close out the regular season, Independence High School baseball entered postseason play as the No. 8 seed at the Rock Creek Regional on Tuesday, May 14. IHS faced off with No. 9 seed Ottawa in the first round and played well early before giving up a four-run fifth inning en route to a 6-0 loss.

Indy softball knocks offChanute at Regionals but loses to host and top seed Wamego

After closing out the regular season with a road win over Parsons, the Independence High School softball team headed to Wamego for the East Regional on Tuesday, May 14. The Lady Bulldogs earned the No. 8 seed and drew No. 9 Chanute in Game 1, picking up an 8-5 victory over a familiar Southeast Kansas League foe. Then in the Regional Championship, IHS was shut out by host and No. 1 seed Wamego by the final of 3-0.

Velazquez propels Royals to victory in Seattle, where wins had eluded KC of late

There is an old adage: “Good things come to those who wait.” And Kansas City Royals designated hitter Nelson Velazquez had certainly waited a long time to hit his third home run of the season — more than a month, in fact. Velazquez finally snapped that homer drought on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Brady Singer falters in KC Royals'series-opening road loss to Seattle Mariners

The Kansas City Royals were on the receiving end of a stellar Monday evening performance from Seattle Mariners starting pitcher George Kirby. Kirby, an All-Star last season, was formidable in limiting the Royals to just three hits in Seattle’s 6-2 series-opening victory at T-Mobile Park.

■ IHS earns second overall, Julian/Denney grab gold in doubles Seeking an elusive fourth straight team title, the Independence High School boys’ tennis team traveled to Topeka this past weekend for the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championship. The three-time defending champs gave it their all, but came up just short and had to settle for the silver as a team.

Looking to head into the postseason on a high note, Independence High School softball headed to Parsons on Friday, May 10 for a single matchup and came away with a win. The Lady Bulldogs leapt out to an early lead and then padded the cushion with a late three-run rally to seal the 8-3 final.

IHS baseball lets late lead slip away versus Vikings in Parsons

After suffering a heartbreaking Game 2 loss at Pittsburg last Thursday on a late rally, the Independence High School baseball team traveled to Parsons on Friday, May 10 to wrap up regular season play. Following a defensive battle for most of the contest, the Bulldogs scored once in the top of the sixth for a 1-0 advantage, but once again were unable to hold on as the home team plated two in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off 2-1 victory.
